£5,500 compensation for stroke victim scarred in hospital

Elderly lady, Edwina Kirkham had been admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke. She was left with permanent scarring to her arm, chest, and body, after knocking over a scalding hot cup of tea onto herself. She was in considerable pain for three months. Personal Injury law firm Rapid Solicitors was approached to take on the case. Mrs Kirkham’s daughter said: “we appreciate that an awful lot of hospital staff work really hard and do a fantastic job, but this was a terrible thing to happen and the last thing that our mother needed, when she’d just been admitted after a stroke. It was a complete lack of common sense and care. I’m thankful to Rapid Solicitors for winning the case. The money is a help in that it can go towards buying some things that will make life easier for her.” A spokesman from Rapid Solicitors’ Medical Negligence department, said: “When a patient has suffered the effects of a stroke and is served a hot drink, standard procedure is to supervise the patient and use an anti-spill lid. Both of these things didn’t happen. The hospital was also at fault for serving tea which was clearly a hazard to patient safety, being hot enough to cause permanently visible scars. The other unfortunate consequence for our client was that the physiotherapy to help her walk, after her stroke, was put on hold for three months because she couldn’t bear to have pressure on her body.”
