World Cup Winners to play at the Rapid Solicitors Ground
Non-League football club West Auckland Town has a unique claim to fame – they won the very first football World Cup! It’s a little known fact that many years before the Jules Rimet Trophy, won by Uruguay in 1930, there was a previous Football World Cup competition, organised by millionaire Sir Thomas Lipton. The competition was held in Italy with teams from Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain. The English Football Association were asked to nominate a team, but declined. Sir Thomas insisted that Great Britain was represented and somehow, amateur colliery team West Auckland from County Durham were put forward - and won it! They beat Stuttgart of Germany 2-0 and F.C. Winterhour, of Switzerland 2-0 in the final at the Turin stadium on April 12 1909. The present West Auckland team play in the Northern League and are set to visit Western League side Bitton AFC on Saturday 21st January, in the Fourth Round Proper of the FA Vase. Bitton play at the Rapid Solicitors Ground, between Bath and Bristol.
